1. Old Ben – The World’s Largest Steer

At Highland Park, Old Ben still draws attention more than a century after his rise to fame. Born in 1902, this massive steer grew at an astonishing rate, eventually tipping the scales at well over 2 tons at the time of his death in 1910. He toured fairs across Indiana and even earned a spot in “Ripley’s Believe It or Not.”

2. Giant Sycamore Stump

Estimated to be up to 1,500 years old, the Sycamore Stump once stood along the Wildcat Creek and reached 100 feet tall before storms reduced it to a hollow, 12-foot stump. Seeking to preserve this enormous relic of the county’s pioneer period, crews undertook a carefully orchestrated effort in 1916 to move the stump to Highland Park. It now shares a pavilion with Old Ben, offering another glimpse into the region’s early landscape.

3. KokoMantis

Towering over the intersection of Sycamore and Washington streets in downtown Kokomo, this piece of public art is pretty hard to miss. This 17-foot-tall, 22-foot-long praying mantis sculpture is built from recycled materials like World War II fuel pontoons and traffic light poles. Painted a striking electric green, its towering presence is perfect for humorous Kodak moments.

4. Willie the Whale

A Hoosier landmark since 1964, you can now find Willie the Whale along the Wildcat Creek Walk of Excellence in Foster Park. Visitors can enter his hollow mouth to see photos and learn about his past stops at a miniature golf course, a zoo, and a water park.

5. Haynes Art & Photo Car

Maybe not as strange, but definitely in the Top 5 is the 1894 replica Haynes Art & Photo Car found in downtown Kokomo’s Artist Alley. Built in 2010 by Duane Johnson and Vernon Graves, this sculpture is an art replica of “America’s First Car” invented by former Kokomo resident Elwood Haynes. Hop in the car and snap a pic!

BobKats bring professional basketball action to Kokomo

The Kokomo BobKats bring high-quality entertainment from top-notch athletes to downtown Kokomo and are Kokomo’s newest basketball tradition.

The team plays its home games at the historic Memorial Gymnasium in downtown Kokomo as a member of The Basketball League (TBL). The atmosphere during home games is nothing short of electric!

Tickets are $20 lower bowl seating and $10 upper bowl seating. Season tickets are $200 lower bowl and $100 upper bowl. You can purchase season tickets and merchandise anytime at 2989 S. Webster St., Kokomo.

Experience Kokomo Opalescent Glass tours

Have you ever wondered how glass is made? Experience a fascinating piece of Kokomo’s history with a behind-the-scenes factory tour at Kokomo Opalescent Glass, the oldest art glass company in the United States!

During the guided factory tour, stand mere feet away and feel the heat as you watch molten glass hand-ladled from a 2,000-degree furnace. The factory has been making world-famous, hand-mixed and colorful sheet glass using the same techniques from its beginnings in 1888 when production started in Kokomo.

Glass produced at Kokomo Opalescent Glass can be seen in installations in Disney World, Air Force Academy, many churches around the world, and even the Vatican. Come experience it for yourself!

Tours are available Monday through Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and must be booked in advanced. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for students. Please call 765-457-1829 to reserve a spot. Fully closed-toed and closed-heel shoes must be worn when touring the factory. At the end of the tour, you can take a piece of Kokomo Opalescent Glass home with you as a complimentary souvenir!

Christmas at the Seiberling: A beloved holiday tradition

Step into a holiday wonderland.

There isn’t a more elegant place to celebrate the season than Christmas at the Seiberling at the Seiberling Mansion in Kokomo, Indiana, and its holiday celebration begins on Saturday, Nov. 29 and will continue through Dec. 30, 2025. This year’s theme is “The Carols of Christmas.”

The elegance and grandeur of the Seiberling Mansion is a perfect setting for its stunning collection of beautifully decorated trees, wreaths and garlands, and more. Inside, take in all the holiday beauty, get some ideas for your own tree, and marvel at the dozens of trees in 20 rooms on all three floors of the mansion. Vote for your favorite decorated room with donations to support the Howard County Historical Society and help pick the People’s Choice!

The Seiberling Mansion will be closed in the run-up to the holiday season to let the decorators do their magic. In the meantime, mark your calendar to start the holidays with your family at the Christmas at the Seiberling Opening Night Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. Santa will arrive at 6 p.m. on Opening Night to help flip the switch and light up the mansion and grounds. Tickets are $10 adults and $5 for students ages 18 & under. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Christmas at the Seiberling regular hours will be Tuesday-Sunday from 1-4 p.m. starting Nov. 30 through Dec. 30, 2025. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children (free admission is a benefit of HCHS membership.)

In addition, Free Sponsored Evenings will be offered on select Thursday and Friday evenings from 4-8 p.m. Free Evenings will be held on Dec. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, and 19, 2025 and are sponsored by generous local community sponsors offering all visitors free admission during these select evening hours.

Also, guests can enjoy a special “candlelight” evening at the Seiberling with the opportunity to explore the museum in the softer light of a bygone era during Christmas at the Seiberling Candlelight Tours on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025. House lights are extinguished or lowered to provide optimal viewing of holiday lights. Tickets are $10 adults and $5 for students ages 18 and under, and kids ages 5 & under free.

The Seiberling Mansion and Elliott House are located in the 1200 block of West Sycamore Street in Kokomo. The mansion is home to the Howard County Museum. Parking lots are accessible via Walnut Street, behind the mansion. Christmas at the Seiberling will continue through Dec. 30, 2025, from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. Non-member admission is $10 adults and $5 for students ages 18 & under, with all proceeds supporting the museum and mansion.

City of Lights in Highland Park

Highland Park’s City of Lights will illuminate Highland Park starting at dusk on Friday, Nov. 28, 2025.

The holiday tradition, which started in 1993 with eight displays, now consists of more than 50 light displays including a carousel, reindeer, Christmas village, Santa listening to his favorite tunes through a jukebox, and more. Even the classic Vermont Bridge gets adorned with festive decor!

Visitors can drive through the display every evening starting at dusk. The lights will stay on all season, and Santa Claus will be there most evenings from 6-10 p.m. through Dec. 24. Admission is free.

The Seiberling Mansion in Kokomo is transformed annually for the holiday season, with every room artfully decorated by local organizations and individuals. Christmas at the Seiberling opens the Saturday after Thanksgiving and runs through the end of the year. This year’s theme is “The Carols of Christmas.”

Visitors can experience the beauty of the historic mansion and its beautiful holiday decor at no cost on select nights in December. Special evening hours will be offered from 4-8 p.m. on Dec. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19, 2025.

During these special evening times, everyone can enjoy free admission to Evenings at the Seiberling thanks to generous local charitable sponsors.

No ticket is required for entry. Musical entertainment will be offered on many of the sponsored evenings.

We Care Trim-A-Tree Festival

Outdoor ice skating returns to downtown Kokomo! The rink will open the Friday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 28, 2025) and will remain open on select dates through January 11, 2026. There will be 33 days open to the public during the 7-week skating season.

Kokomo Municipal Stadium will again transform into The Frozen Sandlot this winter. The 60-foot by 90-foot rink will feature real ice. That’s right, real ice. This isn’t like other temporary rinks which utilize artificial or synthetic ice-like materials.

Not much of a skater? Spectators are welcome! The rink will be placed close to the backstop so you can watch the action on the ice.

Skates will be available to rent and skate sizes vary from Children size 8 to Adult size 13. Can I bring my own skates? Absolutely! Also, you can bring a helmet if you wish. (Helmets will be available for rent as well.)

All tickets can be purchased at the rink with cash or cards.

Parade starts at 6:30 p.m. and route begins at Walnut & Market Streets and ends at Main & Sycamore Streets.

Entries will include local marching bands, lighted floats featuring service organizations, local businesses and personalities, and of course, Santa & Mrs. Claus!

Activities will begin at 4 p.m. and will run until the start of the parade, including vendors, miniature farm animals you can pet, various Christmas characters to meet, kid’s bingo with prizes, writing letters to Santa, free kiddie train rides for children, and more.

The magic of the holiday season kicks off early this year at Heritage Farm, just west of Kokomo. On November 8-9, 2025, the farm will transform into a festive wonderland for a two-day celebration filled with shopping, music, food, and holiday fun.

Wander the beautiful grounds of Heritage Farm and discover one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts from 25 local artisans offering high-quality, handmade items. You’ll also find cozy clothing and accessories made from alpaca fiber inside the farm’s popular alpaca store. All vendor spaces are located in heated tents and barns, ensuring a warm and welcoming shopping experience no matter the weather.

But this event is about much more than shopping — it’s a full day of holiday cheer. Enjoy live music, kids activities, and craft stations where you can make your own Christmas decoration. Grab a bite from fantastic food trucks, sip on beer or wine, and cozy up by the bonfire with a roasted s’more in hand.
